And more than a little ironic, in that many higher education gurus are promoting a shift to courses that don’t cost anything, via online learning offerings. The Cal State University system is launching what it hopes will be successful online science lab courses. CSU’s brain trust reckons that offering online learning courses that can accommodate, literally, thousands of students at one sitting will help uncork some of the bottlenecks that keep young people from earning degrees in a timely manner. The bottleneck occurs when, for whatever reason, a student can’t sign up for a course because it’s full, or he or she missed the sign-up deadline. Major universities nationwide are pushing toward more online learning course offerings. Some of the courses already online have attracted tens of thousands of students. Most of the offerings are not for credit, but that’s coming.
