The examples of using audio and so basic here, yet they add so much to the online learning experience. One cannot underestimate the value of using a variety of communication forms on the web. These are elements that engage learners in exactly the right way. Nothing about them distracts.

On the other hand, second life is not so simple. Is it really worth all the prep time just to learn how to use it? Would observing teaching on second life really be the best use of a teacher trainee's time given a basic standard for online that states that authenticity is critically important? Is teh teaching on second life worth observing? And then there is my personal gripe about second life- being a visual learner I find that needing to look at such strange, unattractive visual stimulation very distracting. I find it difficult to pay attention to what's being said and what's going on.

As a friend and founding director of online at The New School likes to say: "It's not about technology, it's about learning." The first two examples here are about learning.

With renting books for a semester, then there is no risk that the students are stuck with a book that they can’t sell back.

Hopefully many other schools will begin following this same model. In many ways blogging is replacing the standard news outlets of old and the aspiring journalists need to have the tools that they will be using in their life after school.

Dear Tom :
You can do all these with online.
Turkey has done it for 16.000.000 K12 students.
Free internet b roadband + free national curriculum contents for every subject + free computer ( thi,s is a bottle neck now. Only 1 netbook or computer per 10 students. )
Now we are after a one to one project. With new $ 200 10" netbooks we will provide all families with $ 8 per month installment for 36 months.
Digital , that is online is the only way one can do everything in education for today.
Tomorrow there will be a technology better than digital .
Don't miss the boat .
ONLINE is for America with its 60-65 million K12 students . + wonderful contents you have . SHARE your ONLINE contents with all Americans .

It seems to me a lot of folks confuse the textbook (or current day equivalent) with the course. I could see eTexts having the type of multimedia mentioned here though, ironically, textbook publishers don't seem to be going in that direction much. In some cases with really great materials perhaps student self-teaching will be sufficient. But otherwise, we still need a course and coaching from the instructor and peers.
