Wake Tech is a part of this innovative movement and is leading the way for community colleges, as the first in the nation to experiment with offering a MOOC. Starting in Spring 2013, Wake Tech will offer pre-algebra and beginning algebra in MOOC format. There will be no instructor; students will navigate the modular course at their own pace and monitor their own progress through directed self-assessments. The course will be free and open to anyone. A significant number of community college students need some form of remedial math, but often become discouraged by too many prerequisites and lose momentum on their way to completing a degree. Wake Tech’s pre-algebra and beginning algebra MOOC will prepare students for college math and better placement test scores; ultimately, it may eliminate the need for remedial math altogether.
