Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) made a big splash in the world of higher education yesterday, announcing a partnership to offer free online classes to students around the world through a joint non-profit organization. There’s no admissions process to participate in the courses, nor are there class credits or degrees. The prestigious institutions will offer certificates for students who successfully complete exams and assignments in a given course. EdX is the non-profit charged with running this new program that will build upon a similar program run through MIT that began in March. The program will be operated with the support of $30 million donation from both Harvard and MIT. The edX websites says that “Through this partnership, the institutions aim to extend their collective reach to build a global community of online learners and to improve education for everyone.”
