Eric Lefkofsky and Brad Keywell, Groupon investors, led a $3 million Series A vote in Udemy, an online platform that allows anyone to teach or learn from online classes. Located in SOMA San Francisco with a satellite office in Ankara, Turkey, they currently offer over 6000 free and paid courses. The companies 500 Startups and MHS also participated in the fundraising. The new financing will be focused on developing their user base.Udemy generates revenue by charging 30% for paid courses however the majority of courses are available for free. There are currently no plans to host advertising on the website. The purpose is to make education accessible worldwide. Anyone can create an online course. Course selections range from online courses from top universities such as MIT 6.00 Intro Computer Science & Programming and Harvard Engineering courses to product development on Facebook and Yoga classes.
