Five Key Trends for Professional and Continuing Education Leaders in the Next Five Years

Filed under: Online Learning News — Ray Schroeder @ 12:10 am

Ray Schroeder, the Evolllution

Higher education is on the cusp of major changes. Enrollments are on the decline—both online and on campus—and the trend is expected to accelerate.[1] Graduates are laboring under substantial college loan debts totaling more than $1.5 trillion.[2] Employers are demanding that applicants possess soft and hard skills that many college graduates do not hold.[3] At the same time new and emerging technologies are changing the way credentials are shared and work is done. It is in this context that continuing, professional and online programs have been imported from the periphery to the center of traditional universities.

Troubling Trends Towards Artificial Intelligence Governance

Filed under: Online Learning News — Ray Schroeder @ 12:02 am

Jayshree Pandya, Forbes
This is an age of artificial intelligence (AI) driven automation and autonomous machines. The increasing ubiquity and rapidly expanding potential of self-improving, self-replicating, autonomous intelligent machines has spurred a massive automation driven transformation of human ecosystems in cyberspace, geospace and space (CGS). From granting parole to diagnosing diseases, college admissions to job interviews, managing trades to granting credits, autonomous vehicles to autonomous weapons, the rapidly evolving AI systems are increasingly being adopted by individuals and entities across nations: its government, industries, organizations and academia (NGIOA). Individually and collectively, the promise and perils of these evolving AI systems are raising serious concerns for the accuracy, fairness, transparency, trust, ethics, privacy and security of the future of humanity — prompting calls for regulation of artificial intelligence design, development and deployment.

By Dhawal Shah, EdSurge

The first online degrees by Coursera, Udacity and edX have done well, with combined potential revenue of more than $80-million, based on numbers of current students. Over 10,000 students are currently enrolled in a MOOC-based degree program. But the bulk of those of students come from just two universities and three online degrees: the Online Master’s Degree in Computer Science (Georgia Tech with Udacity), the Online Master of Science in Analytics (Georgia Tech with edX), and the iMBA (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with Coursera).

In 2018 we discussed the increasing value of soft skills; how the skills transformation is affecting the way we work; and the rise of the non-linear career path. These topics merely scratched the surface of the changes we’re seeing in education and in the workplace, which we’ll continue to debate in 2019. These are some key trends to keep an eye on this year:

  1. Education emphasizing hybrid skills.
  2. Education goes omnichannel.

Steve Carlin

Today’s workforce is more complex and diverse than ever before. The concept of a career as a single linear path is long gone, as people from all walks of life forge new paths to economic and personal success. For businesses, faster adaptation is the only way to keep pace as technology, education, and globalization are constantly changing the modern work culture. In particular, three trends – labor shortages, the gig economy, and automation – are redefining the way work gets done.

Top Six AI And Automation Trends For 2019

Filed under: Online Learning News — Ray Schroeder @ 12:10 am

Daniel Newman, Forbes

I wish I could tell you there’s still time to get on the AI train. But the truth is, the biggest trend of 2019 will be companies without AI getting left behind. In 2019, we’ll see a marked shift in business reality. Failing to incorporate AI and automation soon will be like sleeping your way through digital transformation. Don’t be the unicorn who showed up to the ark a day too late. Much like them, your company could—and most likely will—go extinct.

The top learning trends for 2019: Towards a digital-human workforce

Filed under: Online Learning News — Ray Schroeder @ 12:05 am

Shelley Osborne, HR Drive

The future workplace will involve a new relationship between people and machines. In fact, according to Accenture, intelligent automation thrives when paired with people to drive better outcomes. “Far from killing jobs and creating a dehumanized future, pioneering companies are using intelligent automation to drive a new—and much more productive—relationship between people and machines,” says Accenture.  Customer service firm 24/7.AI reinvented itself from a call center to an AI-driven customer support experience. But as its AI technology took over simple customer requests, the company trained its human workforce in critical emotional intelligence skills to handle more complex customer calls.

4 ed tech trends colleges should be ready for

Filed under: Online Learning News — Ray Schroeder @ 12:03 am

Hallie Busta, Education Dive
The blockchain and artificial intelligence are among several technologies and practices poised to impact higher ed. The way America goes to college is changing. Rising tuition and new workforce development pathways are encouraging prospective students to consider alternative post-secondary education options. Meanwhile, higher education is consolidating and the colleges remaining are taking programs online to reach a wider audience. And technologies such as augmented and virtual reality are changing the nature of instruction. Yet interest in addressing and even capitalizing on these changes has been measured among higher education leaders. Just 12% of college presidents ranked institutional research in information technology as an important area of development in the American Council on Education’s (ACE’s) latest American College President Study, according to ACE President Ted Mitchell during a presentation at Educause’s annual convention last week in Denver. That’s not to say transformation isn’t quietly underway. “It’s currently happening, and right under our noses,” said Mitchell.

2019 promises to be a big year of technology trends

BY LAURA ASCIONE, eCampus News

2019’s trends will be all about building the “Intelligent Digital Mesh,” which David Cearley, vice president and Gartner Fellow, says has been a consistent theme in recent years.

That intelligent digital mesh focuses on three things:
1. Intelligence: AI drives everything we do across many systems going into the future
2. Digital: The digital world brings the virtual and real worlds together in a new digital reality
3. Mesh: Connecting people, processes, and things together in new and interesting ways

The convergence of these three things supports a continuous innovation process.

Organizations Struggling to Keep Pace with SDN, Networking Trends

Filed under: Online Learning News — Ray Schroeder @ 12:05 am

By David Ramel, Campus Technology
Organizations are hard put to keep pace with new developments in the networking industry, according to a new report. “Between multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) and software-defined networking (SDN), there were about 15 years where the networking world was pretty static,” said Avi Freedman, co-founder and CEO of network analytics firm Kentik, which conducted the survey. “Right now we’re in a world moving as fast as the ISP world did back in the 90s. Every few weeks there’s something new.” The firm polled 531 networking pros during the recent Cisco Live 2018 conference to determine current networking trends and how organizations are addressing industry challenges.

A Product at Every Price: A Review of MOOC Stats and Trends in 2017

Filed under: Online Learning News — Ray Schroeder @ 12:02 am

by Dhawal Shah, Class Central

The MOOC landscape has grown to include 9,400 courses, more than 500 MOOC-based credentials, and more than a dozen graduate degrees. The total number of MOOCs available to register for at any point of time is larger than ever, thanks to tweaks in the scheduling policy by MOOC providers. However, for the first time we are seeing a slowdown in the number of new learners, which is a direct result of a shift in priorities towards users who are willing to pay. According to data gathered by Class Central, around 20 million new learners signed up for their first MOOC in 2017. That’s fewer than the 23 million new learners who registered for a MOOC in 2016. The total number of MOOC learners is now 78 million.

5 trends poised to shake up higher education in 2018

Filed under: Online Learning News — Ray Schroeder @ 12:05 am

by Autumn A. Arnett, Education Dive
In 2017, a focus on adult learners was named the Education Dive: Higher Education Obsession of the Year, and for good reason: According to the National Center for Education Statistics, 8.1 million students enrolled in higher education — or more than 40% — in 2015 were 25+ years old. While 2017 saw a lot of attention placed on adult learners, the industry still has a long way to go on properly serving these students. But leaders may soon realize that many of the adjustments needed to better serve this population would also benefit other students. And it is likely that implementing these strategies may cut down on the overall cost of higher education and communicate additional value, as the physical campus experience is de-emphasized in the name of reaching more students where they already are.
