Alexander Graham Bell received the patent for the telephone in 1876. Philio Farnsworth created the world’s first working television in 1927, which was introduced to the press just months later. Sixteen years ago, Tim Berners-Lee founded the World Wide Web Consortium. The Internet has boomed and taken over. According to a 2008 U.S. Department of Education Condition Report, 100 percent of public schools had Internet connectivity by 2003, with 95 percent of those schools using broadband connections in the same year. The Iowa Department of Education released a similar report this year. Des Moines Independent School district had the highest student per computer ratio at 7.6. Des Moines high schools had more computers than the junior highs and elementary schools, where some had no computers for student use. In an age where technology is hot and essential to education, Des Moines seems to be falling behind.
