Mobile and Wireless: 10 Google vs. Apple Battles to Watch

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 12:20 am

By Don Reisinger, eWeek

A year ago, Apple and Google enjoyed a strong relationship. Google CEO Eric Schmidt was sitting on Apple’s board and the companies were silent partners in a battle against Microsoft. Their goal at the time was to dominate their respective markets and join forces wherever they could to attack their shared enemy, Microsoft. The issues started when Apple rejected the Google Voice application access to the App Store. But rather than find an easy solution, the battle between the two companies ramped up as Jobs and Schmidt traded barbs. That resulted in Schmidt no longer sitting on Apple’s board and Jobs saying that Google’s “Don’t be evil” mantra is nonsense.

HP to Buy Struggling Palm as Ticket into Smartphone Market

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 12:15 am

by Chris Preimesberger, eWeek

HP may be looking at enterprise uses first and foremost as it integrates Palm’s IP into its product lines. Smartphone maker Palm, which never could find a way to outflank Apple and its phenomenally-selling iPhone during the last nine years, has decided on a graceful exit by accepting a $1.2 billion buyout offer from Hewlett-Packard. Palm sold only 408,000 phones last quarter; in contrast, Apple sold 8.7 million iPhones during the same time window. On the other hand, HP, the world’s second-largest IT systems provider, now re-enters a business in which it has had limited visibility and success: connected telephones. But smartphones aren’t the only thing for which HP is investing so much “cash on hand” in Palm.

Robots and gaming on the timetable at hi-tech school

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 12:25 am

By Andrew Webb, BBC

The moment you walk into San Diego’s High Tech High you realise this is a school unlike most others. Teenagers are writing video games, filming sketches, using heavy duty power tools to build a boat – and then there are the robots. In pride of place is Daisy May, a waist-high machine that scuttles around, scooping balls off the ground and projecting them into a bin. “The way she skids replicates the way she would move in the semi-weightless conditions on the moon,” said one of her designers and senior year student, RJ Sheperd.

Cloud computing to double by 2012

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 12:20 am

by the BBC

The UK will spend over £1 billion on cloud computing by 2012 – twice as much as today – researchers predict. This would mean more consumers and businesses subscribing to web-based services, such as Google Apps. Cloud-based services currently account for around 7.5% of the £8 billion UK software market, according to research company TechMarketView. But others say cloud computing is hyped and will complement traditional desktop software rather than replace it.

Does Privacy on Facebook, Google, and Twitter Even Matter?

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 12:25 am

By Farhad ManjooMay, Fast Company

The lesson here is striking: Control matters. Privacy doesn’t. And as long as we’re secure in the knowledge that whatever cool, new Web toy can be turned off, we’re fine letting the world peer deeper and deeper into our lives.

Google App’s Gmail is Ready for Business

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 12:20 am

by Mitch Wagner, Computerworld

Google Apps Gmail, like its equivalent for consumers, is fast, reliable and easy to use. But you need to think about the potential problems before relying on it for your business and personal mail.  Google Apps is the private-label version of Google’s Web-based office suite. The “from” address on your e-mail is your own domain, rather than Gmail.com. Google Apps includes Google Docs, Google Calendar, and more. It has an administrator interface for managing multiple users. Google Apps comes in a free version, or a $50 per user per year Premium version, with tech support and increased e-mail storage quotas.

Google Wave’s Quick, New Wave Templates Guide Your Wave Use

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 12:15 am

by Lifehacker

As excited as some of us still are about Google Wave (two of us wrote a book), Wave’s biggest problem remains: “What would I use it for?” With the app’s new wave templates, Google wants to guide you toward answers.  Now when you visit Wave, the New Wave panel (and the new wave button) offer options for starting waves using templates for common use cases. Gina and I highlighted some of our favorite, creative Wave use cases over at The Complete Guide to Google Wave, but the new templates offer a really helpful jumping off point for collaborating in Wave for common uses, like discussions, task tracking, meeting notes, document creation, and brainstorming. You can still stick with the default blank wave, but it seems like a step in the right direction to help new users get familiar with the tool.

by Nick Saint, SF Gate

Google has announced a major overhaul to Google Docs. Some Docs products have been tweaked, some have been completely redone, and a few new ones have been added.  Across the board, there is a lot of emphasis on collaboration in these updates. A lot of this actually looks just like Google Wave.  Obviously, the world has yet to get as excited about Wave as Google hoped.  Now, everyone who shares Google Docs is using Google’s real time collaboration whether they like it or not.

Google Wave Helps Journalist Win Pulitzer Prize

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 12:20 am

by Brad McCarty, the Next Web

You see, The Seattle Times is one of those organizations that understands how social media and traditional news go hand in hand. When the story broke about four Seattle-area police officers being shot, the Times decided to not only follow the story on their site, but to also get their audience involved by opening a Google Wave for the story. The Wave allowed for real-time updates, not only from the Times staff, but also from readers. As users of the Wave dug through information across the Internet, evidence sightings, witness reports and school closings were given out immediately.

Meet Marty Cooper – the inventor of the mobile phone

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 12:25 am

by BBC

Martin Cooper may not be a household name, but his invention is familiar to more than half the planet’s population who own a mobile phone. The concept of a handheld phone was his brainchild, and with the help of his Motorola team, the first handset was born in 1973 weighing in at two kilos. When he stood on a New York street and made the first phone call from a prototype cellular phone, he could not have conceived how successful it would become.

The update was sent out by security firm McAfee and made affected PCs endlessly restart. Corporate customers of McAfee seemed to be hardest hit but some individuals reported problems too.
