Over the past summer, many young Chinese students reportedly downloaded and watched online courses given by top-ranked universities from the US and UK. Many people welcome this as a new form of acquiring knowledge, while some see this as an opportunity to learn from these top-ranked universities without paying the hefty fee. By talking to some Chinese friends who enjoyed those online courses, I find that what they like about those courses is largely the free, interactive and witty atmosphere in American university classes. Some Chinese professors, especially young ones, have already taken steps to reform course structure, provide more class discussion and adopt diversified assessments rather than one final examination to determine students’ grades.
