4 BENEFITS OF GAMIFICATION IN THE ONLINE CLASSROOM

Filed under: Online Learning News — Ray Schroeder @ 12:10 am

eLearning Inside

According to the 2019 Evolution of Entertainment study, 73 percent of Americans aged two or older play video games every day.  As a result, teachers can capitalize on the same drive and passion for performing without losing any academic integrity in the virtual classroom. Gamifying the learning experience is a significant trend, not least because young people are often more inclined to play games than devote time to their education. Crucially, gamification need not be complex.  Anyone considering the possibility of adding gamification to their online learning routine should be encouraged to do so, and we present four great reasons to do just that.

Opinion: UCLA should consider socioeconomic benefits of hybrid learning going forward

Filed under: Online Learning News — Ray Schroeder @ 12:03 am

Payton Kammerer, Daily Bruin

The pandemic has been a nightmare, but that doesn’t mean UCLA should leave behind the innovations it came with.  Offering online instruction has benefits outside of stemming the tide of COVID-19. Rather than seeing the structures of remote teaching as a vestige of an unpleasant time, administrators must instead imagine it as a tool that will remain useful. UCLA shouldn’t return to the old way of doing things, but use this moment as an opportunity to usher in a better normal that utilizes online learning to the benefit of students and faculty. Now is the ideal time to implement a permanent program of hybrid learning.

Getting a degree pays off, but graduates don’t benefit equally, report finds

Filed under: Online Learning News — Ray Schroeder @ 12:03 am

Natalie Schwartz, HigherEd Dive

The Postsecondary Value Commission, which is supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, created a framework to measure how much attending college benefits a student and to identify equity gaps. At roughly three-quarters of nonprofit public and private colleges, students have median earnings a decade after enrolling that cover their total cost of attendance and are greater than high school graduates in their state, its analysis found. Half of for-profit colleges did not. The commission also analyzed data within the University of Texas System, which revealed deep racial, gender and socioeconomic disparities in the value students gain from their education.

How shared spectrum connectivity benefits distance learning

Filed under: Online Learning News — Ray Schroeder @ 12:10 am

BY ALAN EWING, eCampus News

In January 2020, the FCC authorized commercial use of Citizen Broadband Radio Service (CBRS) connectivity, an initiative that broadly opens the use of the 3.5 GHz spectrum band for shared public and private use. This enables commercial users — e.g. school districts — to leverage a vast amount of invaluable underutilized mid-band spectrum. It provides a cost-effective and high-performance connectivity solution to make uncompromised 4G LTE- and 5G-quality connectivity readily available for education buildings, school campuses and district networks.

Largest-ever study of impact of Open Educational Resources in college reveals benefits of introducing OER courses on a broad scale

Filed under: Online Learning News — Ray Schroeder @ 12:02 am

Achieving the Dream
The study—conducted by SRI Education and rpk GROUP and released at Achieving the Dream’s 2020 DREAM conference here today—found that students enrolled in OER courses earned more credits than non-participating peers and that the effort was cost-effective not just for students but for institutions. Students at the participating colleges saved $10.7 million on the cost of learning materials. As courses became established, institutions were in position to recover their costs or even, in some instances, generate income from the effort as more students signed up for the OER courses.

Who owes all that student debt? And who’d benefit if it were forgiven?

Filed under: Online Learning News — Ray Schroeder @ 12:10 am

Adam Looney, David Wessel, and Kadija Yilla, Brookings

Students loans are now the second largest slice of household debt after mortgages, bigger than credit card debt. About 42 million Americans (about one in every eight) have student loans, so this is a potent issue among voters, particularly younger ones. About 75% of student loan borrowers took loans to go to two- or four-year colleges; they account for about half of all student loan debt outstanding. The remaining 25% of borrowers went to graduate school; they account for the other half of the debt outstanding. Most undergrads finish college with little or modest debt: About 30% of undergrads graduate with no debt and about 25% with less than $20,000.

Study: Community college access linked to higher earnings, health benefits

Filed under: Online Learning News — Ray Schroeder @ 12:10 am

By Natalie Schwartz, Education Dive
Having more community colleges per capita increases the chances that students will complete high school and graduate from college, according to a new working paper.  It is also linked with higher earnings, especially among white and Hispanic people, and a slew of positive health behaviors, including an increase in the frequency of exercise and a lower chance of smoking. The findings come as federal and state policymakers debate whether to lower or eliminate tuition for community colleges in order to boost their enrollment.

A Robot Just Debated Humans on the Benefits and Risks of AI

Filed under: Online Learning News — Ray Schroeder @ 12:03 am

BY ROSIE MCCALL, Newsweek
An artificially intelligent machine took to the podium at the Cambridge Union in the U.K. to debate the pros and cons of AI with humans—at one point telling the audience “AI can cause a lot of harm.” However, it was the side in favor of AI that came out top, achieving a narrow victory by scoring votes from just over half the audience.  The case for the benefits of AI included the argument that it could generate new jobs and bring greater efficiency to the workplace, while those against included the problem of human biases and AI being incapable of making moral decisions.

Three ways EdTech will benefit this century’s learners

Filed under: Online Learning News — Ray Schroeder @ 12:02 am

Felicity Parsisson, Open Access Government

With 66% of millennials and 59% of Gen Z surveyed by Pearson agreeing that ‘technology will transform how college students learn in the future’, it seems clear that the use of technology in teaching and learning contexts is not just predicted: it is expected. Coupled with the majority of Gen Z stating a preference for learning through YouTube videos (59%), as opposed to printed books (47%) and the explosion of MOOCs documented by Class Central (an estimated 101 million learners as of their 2018 research), and it becomes apparent that EdTech is already an important part of the learning landscape. With that in mind, this article considers three key functions of EdTech for this century’s learners.

The numerous benefits of e-learning

Filed under: Online Learning News — Ray Schroeder @ 12:10 am

HR News UK

E-learning demands quality, from both sides. Programs have to deliver knowledge and good learning content, while learners have to have self-discipline, consistency, and determination to learn. The fact that e-learning can be reached anywhere and at any time is probably the biggest advantage. Learners don’t need to travel or move and rent a place in another city or country. With good planning, it’s possible to fit it in the most hectic schedules. It’s also easy on the budget in most cases, which makes it extremely appealing. Another advantage is the possibility to have several, different learning formats.

Squeezed by a tight labor market and shrinking pool of employees, big corporations like Starbucks and Disney are increasingly turning to a new tool for recruitment: education.  Companies are partnering with universities to offer employees fully-subsidized Bachelor’s or Master’s degrees in hopes of attracting ambitious workers who want to build out their careers. “There are so many new jobs that are either coming or that are here already. So it is shifting from an employer standpoint: How you have to differentiate yourself?” said Chris Trout, VP of learning and development at The Walt Disney Company, speaking at the recent ASU GSV Summit in San Diego.

Measuring the Value of Digital Credentials (Part One): The Shared Benefits of Microcredentialing

Filed under: Online Learning News — Ray Schroeder @ 12:10 am

Jonathan Lehrich, Evolllution

With their increased granularity, transparency and portability, digital credentials are quickly supplanting the paper certificate as a means of non-degree skills verification in leading-edge continuing and professional education units. They enable a greater understanding of academic accomplishment and provide academic leaders with a means of unbundling degree requirements; however, as Jonathan Lehrich notes, their use on a broader institutional level is slow in the making. In the first of this two-part interview, Lehrich discusses the growing value of digital credentials to employers, educational institutions and job-seekers alike, and explains what it’s going to take for them to be better recognized by traditional academic departments and faculties.
