One Student’s Inside Look at Online Learning

by Jennifer Hernandez, UMass Online

With the increased availability and selection of online classes these days, it is hard to resist the temptation to actually register for one. With a full time job, family and other commitments, distance learning just makes sense. I couldn’t believe there were no mandatory times required that I would need to be online or “in class.” As long as the work was completed by the set due dates, I could complete the work at any given time within my schedule. I also thought that maybe online classes wouldn’t be as interactive as my prior face-to-face learning experiences. However, that was clearly not a valid assumption after the first week of classes. I was connecting with more people than I would have in a regular class setting. I am known to be on the quieter side so this gave me the opportunity to really connect and get to know my classmates through discussion groups which I found to provide tremendous interactive opportunities.
