When Ginny Wilson was approached about developing an online physical-education course for her school, she was more than a little skeptical. What? Online PE? Are you serious?” was Wilson’s reaction. But now, six months after that initial inquiry, the Manheim Township High School phys-ed teacher is gung-ho about teaching “gym class” outside the boundaries of a bricks-and-mortar school. It will give students with packed academic schedules more flexibility in getting the physical education credits they need to graduate. It also will provide a more personalized alternative to the traditional sweaty, group gym classes that are a turnoff for some students. The fitness-based course, which will begin in the fall, also will address a growing need common to many schools in these lean economic times: doing more with less.
