Education must include modern skills - Kyle Cheney, Burlington News
In an increasingly complex and competitive world, teachers must understand technology and connect coursework to the global economy, curricula should eliminate less relevant material and incorporate modern skills such as global awareness, technology and media literacy, and standardized tests must include these new subjects, a state task force recommended Tuesday.
But the broad recommendations of the so-called 21st-Century Skills Task Force, a collection of public- and private-sector education leaders from across Massachusetts, may be far from becoming reality, its members noted. Although Education Secretary Paul Reville professed a sense of urgency about updating the state’s education system, the report itself concludes that “change takes time.”
