Learning overcomes distance - Gary Glancy, Spartanburg Herald Journal
Karen Barnhill of Gaffney works full time, is married and has a 4-year-old son, so she was excited when Spartanburg Methodist College rolled out its first online course this fall as part of the paralegal certificate program in which she's enrolled.... SMC's launch and the growing number of online offerings at other local colleges and universities underscores the national trend of distance-learning popularity. According to national surveys taken from The Sloan Consortium's "Making the Grade: Online Education in the United States 2006," nearly 3.2 million students took at least one online course during the fall 2005 term, a 35 percent increase over the 2.3 million reported the previous year.
