Long distance learning - Gary Flood, IT Week
Came across quite an interesting sign of the inexorable logic of globalisation in the shape of TutorVista. File this one under why-didn’t-I-think-of-that. TutorVista is an India-based company that delivers home tuition to US and UK kids via their broadband-connected PC. Parents who feel their children could do with more help to supplement their day-to-day classroom work are prepared to shell out £30-£50 an hour for a personal tutor. The idea here is that you can instead sign up for a £50 a month unlimited access to an expert in the topic, according to the company all its tutors are educated to at least Masters level, some to PhD level. English and Maths are the two most requested subjects, says TutorVista. A typical lesson consists of both parties, thousands of miles apart, working on geometry problems together, or biology diagrams, etc.
