Online university aids displaced students - DAVE NEWBART, Chicago Sun-Times
It was 4:45 a.m. the Wednesday after New Orleans flooded when Burks Oakley turned on the television and saw the devastation. Oakley, the director of online programs at the University of Illinois, realized it would be unlikely any of the colleges in that area would be holding classes this semester. He e-mailed a colleague, and immediately they formulated a plan to create a free university offering classes entirely online for displaced students. By noon that day, they'd submitted a proposal to the Sloan Foundation in New York, which Friday approved a $1.1 million grant to fund the program, called the Sloan Semester. http://sloansemester.org
