Distance learning at watershed, lawmaker says - Doug Thompson, Arkansas News
Distance learning has reached a watershed in Arkansas, according to the House Education Committee's chairwoman.... There are 3,500 students using some form of formal, school-approved distance learning. The "overwhelming majority" of those students were taking foreign language classes, said Belinda Kittrell, program manager for distance learning for the state Department of Education. However, that number is expected to increase to at least 4,000 this fall, possibly as much as 5,000, Kittrell said. New school standards are coming into effect.... "Distance learning is going to be growing by leaps and bounds, to put it mildly," Kittrell said. "That's just a fact." This is especially true since the use of the techniques are not restricted to small, isolated districts, she said.
