Soldier Hits The Books in Afghanistan - Michael N. Graff, The Winchester Star
In Afghanistan these days, there’s plenty of time to bide for the soldiers attached to the Virginia Army National Guard’s 3rd Battalion, 116th Infantry Regiment. But while most camps are filled with troops playing cards, chewing tobacco, and scrolling through letters, Spc. Pete Houghton might stick out with his computer, his thinking cap, and a list of project deadlines. Houghton, a soldier in the battalion’s Woodstock-based Bravo Company, is testing the boundaries of Lord Fairfax Community College’s distance learning program this year as he continues to pursue his associate’s degree from a half a world away.
