Excelsior College has commencement for students in distance-learning program - KENNETH AARON, Albany Times Union

Lillian Harden has experienced college life before. The sprawling quads, the ivy-covered walls, the sis-boom-bah of big football games on crisp autumn days. Excelsior College offers none of that. But it's Excelsior that she graduated from Friday, attending a commencement ceremony that was more than a decade -- and multiple continents -- in the making. "It took me 14 years for this special moment," said Harden, an Army staff sergeant now stationed in Alexandria, Va., who worked on her degree while based in Iraq. Harden was among 4,431 who graduated from the distance-learning school, although just 170 attended Friday's event in the Empire State Plaza convention center.
