You'll be pleased to know that the world remains a safe place for Mickey Mouse, at least for another 20 years. That, in essence, is one consequence of the U.S. Supreme Court's decision on Jan. 15, 2003 in Eldred v. Ashcroft. The Supreme Court affirmed the right of the Congress to extend the term of copyright. Congress has extended the terms of copyright 11 times over the past 40 years. The Eldred case, strongly supported by many in the campus community, was a challenge to the 1998 Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act, which added an additional 20 years to the term of copyright.
