Carnegie Mellon's West Coast Campus Expands Innovative Programs

Carnegie Mellon University West (CMUWest) announced today the expansion of its learn by doing Masters Degree programs in the computer sciences. As the first academic year comes to a close, during which 75 students were enrolled, CMUWest has added a two-year track for college graduates with no prior computer science experience who wish to pursue a Masters Degree. Carnegie Mellon West's unique philosophy is based on the approach of education innovator Roger Schank. Instead of attending classes and taking tests, students work on ongoing projects and are mentored through faculty online. This is a major departure from other online learning programs that simply recreate the traditional classroom setting through the Internet. CMUWest's approach to online education, online and on-campus mentoring from top faculty and professionals, and an emphasis on collaborative learning simulates the environment that students will enter after graduation, preparing them for the real world.
