Ancient sites preserved in digital splendor - Rex W. Huppke, Associated Press

Imagine touring an ancient Mayan ruin, noting the striking details carved into the gray outer walls of a decaying temple, hearing the sounds of native music ... then taking a break to pick up your child from school. Now imagine being able to do this decades from now, when the ruin might no longer even exist. A multidisciplinary project at Indiana University is attempting to digitally preserve endangered archaeological sites, compiling vast amounts of data -- from still photos to virtual-reality tours -- that can be accessed through the Internet.
