Businesses find big profits in online education - Myra Lu, Taipei Journal
The Internet has completely changed people's perceptions of distance and time, and they are finding new ways to better their lives using Taiwan's ubiquitous high technology. Since the public and private sectors began encouraging lifelong learning, students and career-minded professionals have found themselves surfing the net not just for fun, but also for education. Not being able to meet with the teacher in person may seem like a weird way to learn, but a growing number of part-time students are beginning to accept this unconventional method of acquiring knowledge--particularly when they are full-time employees who need to upgrade their credentials but cannot get away from their day jobs. Cashing in on the demand for online tutelage, technology developers, course designers and even school administrators are gearing up to tweak the island's higher and extended education in the hope that consumers will keep up with the times and log in more often.
