Online classes fit busy lifestyles - CLAUDETTE RILEY, the Tennessean
... Better serving the needs of students who rarely, if ever, set foot on campus was the focus of the 10th annual Adult Learning Conference at Middle Tennessee State University. It started Thursday and wrapped up yesterday. Renee Weiss, a professor at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, told about 50 students, teachers and administrators attending the conference that well-developed courses that focus on students' needs were the key to successful programs. Adult students — especially women — are drawn to online classes because they're convenient, Weiss said. Students can communicate with teachers, turn in assignments and participate in discussions without ever leaving home. Successful online teachers create a sense of belonging, communicate frequently with students and develop academically rigorous courses, said Sharon Felton, director of liberal studies at Belmont University.
