Distance Education and Library/Information Services: Some Management Issues - James H. Sweetland

For good or ill, distance education is growing rapidly, especially that connected with use of computer-based information systems, such as interactive video and the World Wide Web. While there is a growing body of literature on the subject, the amount of material concerned with management issues is still rather small, and that concerned with library management issues smaller still. As far as libraries are concerned, the primary issue is that the students are at some distance from the library. Thus the traditional services and systems we have developed over the course of about 150 years do not serve these students. As more libraries become involved, the need to re-think much of what we have done grows, with at least the following topics requiring consideration.
