New School U. and Britain's Open U. Create a Distance-Education Partnership

New School University announced a partnership on Monday with Britain's Open University to develop distance-education programs and expand both institutions' markets in North America and Europe. Open University, which has one of the oldest and largest distance-education programs in the world, has been struggling to break into the American education market. The partnership with New School follows an unsuccessful attempt to create a stand-alone institution called U.S. Open University, as well as a brief partnership with the University of Maryland-Baltimore County.... "The Open University wants to establish a position in the U.S., but it wants to do it with a partnership strategy," Mr. Maidment said. "It's partly for our materials to get into the United States, and it's partly to distribute the materials of the New School."
