Iowa State University to teach the world with the help of the Internet

Proportionately more credit hours are being earned through ISU's distance learning program by people outside of Iowa. The ratio increased 3 percentage points in 2002. The jump is explained by exposure on a Web site that promotes distance education at U.S. research universities. As more and more people become technologically savvy, earning college credits with a computer has become more attractive, said Lynette Spicer, a communication specialist for ISU's Continuing Education and Communication Services. "I'm assuming that we just keep growing as far as the reach," Spicer said. This year, students from 47 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, American Samoa, Canada, Indonesia, Pakistan and Thailand earned credit from ISU from afar. Distance classes are defined as those that are administered by ISU instructors to students off campus. Classes are taught with various technologies including CD-Rom, DVD and the Internet.
