Getting a Handle on Learning Content Management Systems - DAVID A. WILLIAMS, Darwin Magazine

... A robust LCMS can be viewed as a form of knowledge management (KM) system that bridges the gap between information and learning by capturing information in a wide variety of original formats and wrapping a package around it that facilitates modularizing, elaborating upon, sharing, re-using, managing and presenting it in the context of training courses, an online reference library, online job aids, presentations and other forms of business communications. Unlike general purpose KM solutions (and website content management systems), LCMSs are optimized for converting information into interactive learning content and presenting content in a wide variety of presentation styles to fit the content, the audience and the learning objectives. They are especially well-suited for efficiently turning proprietary knowledge into proprietary content that yields a competitive advantage and all the benefits of e-learning.
