Distance learning clicking along - Brad Buck, Palatka, Florida Daily News

Distance learning comes at the click of a mouse or the remote control, and its popularity is soaring at St. Johns River Community College, administrators said. Dr. John Skelton, dean of the Open Campus at SJRCC -- where students learn through distance education -- presented a report on telecourses and online courses to the college's Board of Trustees on Tuesday night. Telecourses and online courses are popular because they cut the number of days students have to commute to campus and they enable people with busy work schedules to take college courses, Skelton said. "We have students now how are more technically minded," Skelton said. "We're running out of classroom space." When the college started its distance learning program in 1996, 118 students took telecourses, Skelton said. In 2001-02, 780 took the courses.
