Europe catching up in eLearning

In March 2001, the European Commission adopted an eLearning Action Plan: "eLearning: designing tomorrow's education", to adapt the EU's education and training systems to the knowledge economy and digital culture. The eLearning initiative seeks to mobilise the educational and cultural communities, as well as the economic and social players in Europe, in order to speed up changes in the education and training systems for Europe's move to a knowledge-based society. More recently, at the Barcelona European Council on 15-16 March 2002, the Council agreed that the education and training systems in the EU should become a "world quality reference by 2010". The Council called on the European Commission to draw up an eEurope 2005 action plan, which should focus on eLearning - among several other priorities - while ensuring that the digital content involved is available in the learner's native language....
