Developing a Community of Learners: Potentials and Possibilities in Web Mediated Discourse

For over 30 years, computer technology has been used in education in a variety of ways. Initially, typical web educational systems largely embraced static tutorial-style approaches, such as drill and practice or noninteractive delivery of educational materials (Jones, Kirkup, & Kirkwood, 1993; McIntyre & Wolff, 1998; ). Much of the energies of early visionaries were devoted to highlighting the role of the computer as a tool to augment, rather than automate human intellect and interaction.
