Due in part to his efforts, "Hawaiian 101," an online language class offered by the University of Hawaii at Hilo, went live on the Internet this week. University officials believe this is the first time an indigenous language will be taught solely over the Internet. The class uses the same curriculum as the Hawaiian language classes taught at the university, and students will learn basic Hawaiian as well as local culture and traditions. But teaching Hawaiian online is complicated because of the nature of the language and the limits of current technology....
