Mixed success for online colleges

Fifteen years ago, Mercy College professor Frank McCluskey began fiddling with computer software a friend had lent him. The program, a kind of electronic bulletin board, allowed students to dial into the professor's home computer and leave messages for him and for one other. Amazed at the software's potential, McCluskey began experimenting with writing artificial intelligence programs for his philosophy students. His early efforts led to Mercy becoming one of the first colleges to use online education in 1990. That trend has grown exponentially since those early days.... The Sloan Foundation, a New York-based philanthropic organization that funds many online education projects... estimates that 3 million students across the nation are earning their degrees online, and that registration for online education is growing at a rate of 20 percent annually....
