The Conversation In Cambridge: Future of Assessment Online

On April 18, 2002, education and technology thought leaders from around the country converged in Cambridge, Mass., for a conversation about the future of online assessment. The event started with a debate on the most polarizing education issue of our time -- high-stakes state testing. Participants were roughly equally split on the issue. Disagreements exposed in the first session were more the result of the pragmatic trade-offs of the current paper-and-pencil testing regime than real ideological differences. They then discussed a statewide assessment system for 2012. The general consensus: The assessment system of the future should use multiple forms, embedded into classroom instruction with timely results....
