Five Phases for Online Community Building

"Online teaching is not for me; I want my students to learn," said the business teacher. But she does not understand... Online learning is a merger of teaching and technology to attain optimum learning, with technology remaining in the background. It is best understood as an environment of common purposes and interests in which technology enables users to achieve the shared experience of community. These virtual learning communities, collaborative and supportive, foster teamwork through trust, openness, honesty, and respect among members. Meaning is derived through the written interactions. Dr. Nan Chico, of California State University's Graduate School, explains that students thrive by utilizing "a sociological framework to analyze the process of creation, … and change in an online community." (Chico, 2001, para. 1) A student-centered community derives in five phases, resulting in a constructive and meaningful learning experience....
