http://chronicle.com/free/2002/07/2002070201t.htm A Book and CD-ROM Offer Humanities and Social-Science Professors Tips for Using Computers BROCK READ When Orville Vernon Burton and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign decided to commemorate their 1993 conference on computing in the humanities and social sciences, they had no idea the project would take nearly a decade to complete. "We were just going to edit a book with papers from the conference," says Mr. Burton, a professor of history and sociology at the university. "But you couldn't really explain the excitement of the innovations that were occurring in the traditional written form." ... In the book, Mr. Burton compiles eight essays about the computer age and its effects on teaching and research in humanities and social science. The articles occasionally present case studies and best practices, but they focus on broader themes, like the history of technology, copyright issues, and the role of women in research computing....
