In Antarctica, a Distance-Education Student Worries About His Internet Link

Some people take distance-education courses after getting home from the office and putting the kids to bed. Justin Wallace gets to his studies after he's made sure that an ice storm won't knock out his Internet connection or his power at Mawson Station, Australia's oldest Antarctic base. Mr. Wallace is a communications technical officer at the station, and is responsible for maintaining the satellite and telecommunications equipment. He's also studying networking technology through a distance-education course from the University of Southern Queensland. The Chronicle interviewed him by e-mail....
