Editorial: Accessibility...An Integral Part of Online Learning

According to Dr. Cyndi Rowland, director of the higher education Web Accessibility In Mind (WebAIM) project, the rationale for developing accessible Internet-based materials is founded on three simple principles. First, providing equal access to educational opportunities is simply the right thing to do. Vast amounts of valuable educational material are being gleaned from the Internet every day by students and professors alike. Just as physical accessibility is routine across campuses, virtual accommodations are just as necessary across the Internet. From this ethical perspective most individuals agree that education should be made accessible to everyone. Second, creating accessible formats for education is smart from an economic standpoint. When Internet courses are accessible to individuals with disabilities the institution will see an increase in the number of learners registering and paying tuition. If you are not compelled to want to provide accessible Internet sites by the first two reasons, you may be by the third. It is the law in the United States....
