International Consortium Readies Ambitious Distance-Education Effort

The next year will see whether Universitas 21 -- a high-profile international consortium of 17 universities from Asia, Australia, Europe, and North America -- can sell online degrees worldwide. Created in 1997, the consortium plans to offer its first product, a master's degree, throughout Asia in early 2003. Now that the courses are almost ready, Universitas 21's member institutions -- including the University of Virginia in the United States -- are starting to put more effort into their other emphasis: devising new ways of academic cooperation....
