Connecting The Dots: Distance Education: International Systems in Developing and Advanced Countries

Throughout the world, several factors have contributed to the popularity of distance education. In Asia, Africa, and Latin America these factors have been related to the lack of educational resources. In these countries years of colonial rule, ravages of World War II, and a general lack of adequate public service in health and education sectors created poor economic circumstances under which the majority of population were deprived of traditional schools and universities. Such institutions simply did not exist, or were very few and hardly adequate to respond to massive needs of a growing population. Therefore, print, motion pictures, radio, and television have been used extensively to reach people of developing countries in mass and provide them with education and information. Many developing countries have recently begun to use the Internet for educational purposes. But lack of an adequate telecommunication infrastructure has been impeded their progress....
