Lectures and discussions are online, but the meat of the course is a series of ethnographic and documentary films offering first-hand glimpses of cultures spanning the globe. David Hartman, a professor of anthropology at the University of North Texas, developed "World Cultures Through Film" as a lecture-hall course. But Mr. Hartman found that his additional duties as dean of the university's School of Community Service often took him off campus, so he modified the class to accommodate online lessons and discussion....
