Svinicki Recently, there has been a noticeable shift from teacher-centered science classrooms to various student-centered learning environments (SCLEs) that promote student involvement. One of the strategies associated with SCLEs is investing students with some measure of control over their own work, which is intended to bolster their confidence in the course and their ability to succeed in it. Since these strategies are new to students and teachers alike, a great deal of uncertainty often arises during the transition to SCLEs, but few scholars have addressed this problem either directly through a discussion of its potential impact or indirectly through suggestions about implementation....
