Having launched its online program in 1994 with 110 enrollments, the university this year has nearly 21,000 students and nearly 63,000 “virtual seats” in such courses. And it is likely to continue to grow rapidly, according to the Maryland Higher Education Commission. The commission concluded in July that UMUC, which also offers traditional classroom-based courses at various sites in Maryland and overseas, would triple its enrollment by 2010.....
