But Simon Avenell said public universities faced pressure from the Government for more use of information technology to cut delivery costs within their campuses and from employers to teach IT skills to their students. "There will certainly be a place for online delivery of higher education ... but the fundamental place of universities is not under threat," Dr Avenell said in a paper this week concentrating on online courses as a form of e-commerce....
