Discipline, active learning required
By J.N. SBRANTI, BEE STAFF WRITER

Not everyone is cut out for online college classes. Virtual courses may be the perfect option for some students, but they're a waste of tuition for many. Statistics show that only about half of the people who enroll in online courses actually finish them. "Online classes require a student who is self-disciplined -- an 'active learner,'" according to Modesto Junior College's official warning to potential online students....

(ed. note:Approx. 90% of those enrolled in UIS online classes on day ten of the semester, finish the class - perhaps there are other pedagogical issues involved such as engagement and student-centered learning, and there may also be age issues involved - UIS' average online student is 36)
