Safawi women take a leap across digital divide

SAFAWI — Every day for the last three weeks, Fatima, 21, has been crossing Baghdad Street — a narrow, truck-infested highway slicing through the middle of this town and stretching towards Jordan's eastern borders — to reach the newly-opened Prince Hussein Information Technology Community Centre. At the modestly-furnished, one-storey building, she seats herself before an IBM Pentium III, types her user name and password and logs into her Hotmail account .... Fatima is anxiously waiting for replies from local universities about enrolling in their distance-learning programmes....
