An Audit Finds Flaws in How an Institution Counts Its Correspondence Students

A federal audit has found that Indiana State University's student-aid program had trouble tracking students as they switched from taking traditional and online courses to correspondence courses.

The audit reveals some of the difficulties that colleges' student-aid offices can encounter as they try to apply existing federal financial-aid rules to an increasingly complex mix of educational options. The audit, conducted by the Education Department's Office of the Inspector General, was a fact-finding mission more than an investigation into wrongdoing, according to the report. After reviewing records of a sample group of students who were receiving financial aid for distance education, auditors concluded that Indiana State was generally enforcing federal aid rules well....
