http://www.chronicle.com/free/2001/06/2001062101u.htm Bill to Ease Restrictions on Distance Providers Is Praised at Hearing By DAN CARNEVALE Washington A bill that would soften two key financial-aid restrictions would promote distance education among traditional institutions -- and could be a step toward liberating other online institutions from the burdensome regulations as well, participants said at a House of Representatives subcommittee hearing Wednesday. The proposed legislation, H.R. 1992, would ease regulations that prevent many institutions that offer distance-education programs from providing federal financial aid to their students. But the bill is worded in a way that will still prevent some kinds of distance institutions -- especially those not connected with traditional colleges -- from joining the financial-aid program. ...
