They envision readers of e-books being able to click on a footnote or an offhand reference to another book and immediately view a copy of the citation in question. Actually creating such a seamless system is easier said than done. But help may be on the way. Last month, visitors at BookExpo America, a publishing trade show, saw the first demonstration of a new system for tracking digital content. It works by tagging each e-book or other piece of digital content with a number called a digital object identifier, or D.O.I. The number acts like a bar code, enabling companies throughout the publishing industry to track material according to a standard format. When embedded in an electronic document like an e-book or a Web page, the identifier also functions as a hyperlink to other relevant material....
