Learning through play - Jennifer Bacchus, Jacksonville News
The Jacksonville City School System is getting a software upgrade thanks to a grant from the Alabama Department of Education, The Council for Leaders in Alabama Schools and the software manufacturer, Learning Through Sports. The school system received Kid’s College for the first time during the 2002-2003 school year. At the time it was only for certain grades. This upgrade, however, gives the students in kindergarten through eighth grade the chance to learn while playing games with some of their favorite sports – all on a computer.

As a physical education teacher I am always looking for ways to provide interdisciplinary units for my students. This sounds like a wonderful opportunity for physical education to connect with math and language arts. Also, it appears to be a good learning opportunity for my middle school students. Any time you can combine activities they love to help them with math and language arts you have provided them with a positive experience. The fact that they can work from home is also a plus! I see advantages to being able to set up the "competitions" differently. This will keep the activity fresh for the students and encourage repeated use.

Has anyone had experience with the “Kid’s College” software? It sounds like it would be a beneficial experience for the students and teachers. I followed up by checking out the Kid’s College web site. I plan on learning more about the program.

Thanks for posting the information. It is great to have an opportunity to find technology to use in a physical education class.
